As the sharp claws of recession dig ever deeper, many are looking to sunnier climes as a way to escape the gloom and doom of a failing economy.
With financial pressure increasing in Scotland and unemployment threatening to rise, living and working abroad is becoming increasingly popular. Roughly 10% of Scots already live abroad according to the Office of National Statistics and this is set to rise as people emigrate in an effort to escape the misery of the crunch.
But, unless your have skills or experience that someone wants, what jobs are there for you abroad? Most people do not have such skills, but what they do have is the ability to speak English. And never before has the global demand for English been so high. “The truth is that if you can speak English, you can teach it”, says Joe Hallwood of TEFL Scotland. Back in the early ‘90s, Joe Hallwood was working in a boring job paying off endless debts, “I heard about a teaching job in Greece,” explains Joe Hallwood. “ I’d never taught before, but I knew I had to get out.” Fifteen years later, having taught in Greece, France and the USA, he now runs courses for first time teachers in Scotland, giving them the skills and qualification to teach English abroad.
Fraser Duff, a construction engineer from Glasgow, recently attended a TEFL Scotland course. “I’m working on a site at the moment and I just needed to find something else. The course gave me the confidence in myself to teach English. So, that’s me off to South America in the new year to teach English!”
Based in Beauly, TEFL Scotland is the first Scotland-based organisation to offer TEFL courses that are open to everyone whatever your qualifications and experience. The short courses run over one weekend at locations throughout Scotland with the next course being held in Inverness on 8th & 9th November.
The courses present an ideal opportunity for anyone who speaks English to turn this ability into a new skill and an opportunity to teach English abroad. For an information pack call 01463 782 685 or visit www.teflscotland.co.uk.
