Roundbox Global Develops Next-Generation Prescriptive Learning System to Help Hotels Manage Energy Consumption
Atlanta, GA, April 03, 2009 – Atlanta-based education technology and professional services consultancy Roundbox Global announced the development of a next generation prescriptive learning system that incorporates empirical data with operational analysis, helping hotel managers, owners, and franchisees determine their “green” levels and prescribe steps to become more cost effective and environmentally friendly.
The system allows users to measure and manage energy, waste, and water consumption—comparing data across locations and identifying opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiency. Additionally, in response to a growing interest from guests who are looking for sustainable hotels that manage their environmental impact, the system will provide extensive reporting functionality, enabling hotel managers to analyze data and communicate green initiatives to guests and corporate clients.

Roundbox Global developed the application’s interactive front-end utilizing Adobe Flex in a PureMVC framework, with back-end integration via BlazeDS powered by Java and implementing Spring/Hibernate frameworks in a JBoss container. The application was built using best practices in user-centered design, continuous integration, automated unit testing using JUnit and FlexUnit, and a rigorous Scrum-based SDLC.
A limited rollout of the application began in January 2009, with extensive adoption expected in over 4,000 individual hotels beginning in mid-2009. Preliminary trials have shown potential energy savings through the application at up to 25%, with an estimated potential for savings at as much as $200 million.
