Researchers Join their Forces to Find a Cure Against HIV
Toulon, France, December 06, 2010 -- Current therapy for HIV infection requires life-long administration of drugs. Despite this, HIV persists in “viral reservoirs” and each time therapy is stopped, the infection rekindles.
Although ' HIV eradication' has been a dirty word for a decade, a new hope is ahead. Several lectures at the International AIDS Conference in Vienna in July 2010 discussed the possibility to reach 'drug-free remission' and several efforts are now going in this way.
New strategies need to be tested either to try to 'purge' the HIV reservoir or to obtain a 'sabotage' of persistent HIV infection.
Basic science researchers and clinical science doctors involved in the fight against HIV and AIDS for several years have founded this group and will collaborate for a world free of AIDS in the next decade.
