Gordon Brown Condems Mumbai Terror Attacks
(NewDesignWorld Press Release Center) 27 November 2008, Mumbai -- A British Euro-MP was among guests forced to flee fire in their Mumbai hotel during an attack by gunmen.

North West Tory MEP Sajjad Karim, part of a delegation of MEPs visiting Mumbai ahead of a forthcoming EU-India summit, was in the Taj Mahal Palace during the attack.

He said: "I was in the main lobby and there was all of a sudden a lot of firing outside."

He turned to get away "and all of a sudden another gunman appeared in front of us, carrying machine gun-type weapons. And he just started firing at us... I just turned and ran in the opposite direction," he said.

Hours later, he remained holed up in the hotel, unsure if the incident was over, and whether it was safe to come out. We have no idea what's going on," he said.

Gordon Brown vowed to support a "vigorous response" by the Indian government to the attacks in Mumbai, which have left 78 people dead and 200 injured.

The Prime Minister promised to back the Indian government as it responds to the series of incidents carried out by heavily-armed gunmen.

"These outrageous attacks in Mumbai will be met with a vigorous response," Mr Brown said in a statement.

"I have sent a message to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the UK stands solidly with his government as they respond, and to offer all necessary help.

"Urgent action is under way to offer every possible protection to British citizens in the region."
