Few SEO companies are true search specialists

In order to better understand the nature of the UK search engine market Vertical Leap commissioned a report into optimisation services available in the UK, from UK
providers- as defined by Google's search results. The intention was to deliver an accurate picture of the service offerings and specialisms from the growing number of companies offering optimisation services.
The research was carried out by analysing the top 300 pages returned in Google for the phrase "search engine optimisation". The results were sanitised by removing non-commercial entities, and duplicates 83 in total. The remaining 217 sites were interrogated to provide data such
as:
* geographical location
* services offered
* services offered by any parent company
Of those 217 businesses, just 83% (181) were physically based in the UK.
As an aside, the most numerous overseas listings were not from the USA but from Australia, a counter intuitive finding.
The findings show that only 19% (34) of those UK businesses provide only search engine marketing services- and no other complimentary/plug-in services. The other 81% of companies offer hosting, email marketing, web design, display advertising, as well as a number of other miscellaneous services.
The results were further refined by stripping out businesses that could be defined as independent consultants or one-man bands. This showed that only 12% of companies in the UK who offer SEO services focus exclusively on search.
The key take-away from this information is that there are many SEO providers, but few appear to be SEO specialists. Implementing and managing effective SEO campaigns requires specialist skills and experience, and dedicated processes. It is debatable whether service providers offering multiple, distantly related services are truly capable of this.
