Miss Vera’s Feb. 25 Talk on Fashion, Gender, Celebrity and Photography
and Feb. 27 Workshops to Complement Exhibition Opening

WHAT:

The internationally renowned exhibition Edward Steichen: In High Fashion the Condé Nast Years, 1923-1937 will make its debut in Florida at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University on February 26, 2010, where it will remain on display through April 11, 2010. The exhibition features the finest examples of Steichen’s celebrity and fashion portraiture made for Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines between 1923-1937 and marks the first time in Florida that such an extensive array of Steichen’s work has been exhibited.

Steichen, who served as chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair during the 1920s and ‘30s, is said to have revolutionized fashion photography with his crisp, detailed, high-key style, and changed public perceptions of the American woman. His influence is felt in the field to this day.

Steichen’s portraits of icons such as Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Amelia Earhart, Ginger Rogers, Loretta Young, Martha Graham, Dorothy Parker, and many others will be on display.

“Edward Steichen produced a body of work of unequalled brilliance. He revolutionized fashion photography, and pioneered a new visual language of glamour, profoundly shaping the look of celebrity and fashion to this day” said Irvin Lippman, Executive Director of the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale. “In conjunction with In High Fashion, the Museum has selected works from its extensive photography collection to illustrate images of people (from business people to circus performers) in their daily line of work, wearing their working clothes. We have, with tongue in cheek, called the exhibition It’s Not About Fashion!”

The exhibition is organized by the Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne, and the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Minneapolis, in conjunction with the International Center of Photography (ICP). It opened in New York City at ICP in early 2009, and has since been shown throughout Europe.

In conjunction with the exhibition opening, Veronica Vera, founder of the world famous New York City cross-dressing academy Miss Vera’s Finishing School for Boys Who Want to Be Girls, will present a Thursday, February 25, 2010 inter-active talk titled Miss Vera’s Lessons in Life, Liberty & Lipstick, covering fashion, gender, celebrity and photography. The after party features cocktails, music, and a book signing. Open for men and women aged 21 and over.

In addition, Miss Vera will give a Saturday, February 27, 2010 workshop entitled Miss Vera’s Amazing Grace: How to Walk, Sit and Pose in High Heels. And another workshop called Miss Vera’s Cross-dress for Success: A Transformation Salon for Men and Women. Both workshops are open for women and men aged 18 years and over. Miss Vera was previously a model for artist Robert Mapplethorpe, who was influenced by Steichen. Tickets are required for both the talk and the workshops.
