More and more people are coming to the realization that traditional drug treatment and drug rehabs do not work. As thousands of people complete treatment programs only to relapse within weeks, days or even hours of leaving these programs, people are now searching for an alternative. They are searching for something that truly will work for them or their loved one.
New treatment facilities are now opening at an alarming rate. Some claim to be an “alternative” to drug treatment programs, yet be cautious; many of these programs have the same meat and potatoes but have added in a few new side dishes to give the appearance that they are different. Some of these “alternative” programs claim to have success rates as high as 80%, 90% or even more, but have performed no follow-up surveys, no statistical analysis, have not been willing to allow independent organizations to perform follow-up studies, and cannot provide not even a single page of documentation to support their claims. In essence they are lying and as a result they are hurting people.
There are more and more alternative drug treatment programs opening each day across the United States and the world. The competition to get your hard earned money is fierce and many companies are resorting to telling you what they think you want to hear, when what they deliver is completely different. So how can you tell if an alternative to drug rehab is truly an alternative? The answer is simple - talk to them and ask questions. Start by telling them you have no insurance and little or no money, even if this is not entirely the truth, and listen for their reaction. Any program that stops listening to you or worse yet, ends the call, is not the program for you and certainly is not an alternative to traditional drug treatment. If you are looking for an alternative be leery of programs that accept health insurance as all programs who work with insurance companies must have a medical component. Also be cautious of programs who offer “alternative” detoxification services such as sauna treatments and intensive vitamin therapy as there is no research to support the efficacy or safety of these methods.
Please keep a close eye on this blog as you will see a clear delineation in the coming months between traditional drug treatment programs and an alternative to drug treatment. Traditional drug treatment programs whether they are based on the disease or dependency models, 12 step models or religion all employ what we have now termed to be “the Control Model.” These programs dictate to you how they feel you should live your life, how you should think and act, and what things should and should not be important to you. In other words, programs based on the Control Model seek to control your life. All judgments made by professionals in these programs are based on each professional’s moral ideal of how they feel you should live your life.
