Car Dealers In U.S. Warn By Toyota About Car Shortage This Summer

The reason behind the likely shortage is being put on the earthquake that hit Japan. Much has been reported on the damages the earthquake have had on the country as well as the automobile sector and car dealers.
The deadly earthquake hit Japan on the 11th of March, but the aftermath caused by it is huge in quantum and hence will take sizeable time in recovering the loss and same applies to the North American market for car dealers sales.
Especially because Toyota’s Prius’ production plants which were situated in the areas which were directly hit by the natural disaster is one of the major reasons why the company has warned the U.S. of the same. But the memo issued by the Toyota GM U.S. general manager Bob Carter said the rest of the line of the cars would remain unaffected, as per reports from the Associated Press.
A breath of relief in this major declaration by the automobile giant is that despite the heavy losses none of the 25,000 workers of Toyota will be laid off. But since the demand of Toyota cars is high in the U.S., it is reported that, they plan to ship cars every two weeks.
Here’s an excerpt from the official news right from Carter. He says, "The potential exists that supply of new vehicles could be significantly impacted this summer. Toyota is producing cars and trucks at significantly reduced levels in April and hasn't set its production schedule for May through July."
Carter further added that the company is changing the colors of some vehicles (exterior body only) because of shortages of a chemical produced by a supplier. Toyota has indicated that its U.S. plants won't make cars on five days this month.
"Toyota now has 300,000 vehicles available in the U.S. Having sold 176,222 cars and trucks in March by the car dealers, Toyota's current stockpile means the company has less than two months' supply," said Carter.
