Biodiesel test bed project takes off in Singapore
The project marks the country’s first biodiesel testbedding project and is part of its efforts to develop and testbed energy solutions from renewable resources.A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in December 2006 was signed to kickstart this project that would involve the testing and evaluation of biodiesel in modern diesel-powered cars in Singapore. The nine-member group includes overall project coordinator Robert Bosch (SEA) Pte Ltd, and other organisations such as DaimlerChrysler (SEA) Pte Ltd, Diesel Tech Pte Ltd, Economic Development Board, Kuok Oils & Grains Pte Ltd, National Environment Agency, Nexsol (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Shell Eastern Petroleum (Pte) Ltd and the Volkswagen Group Singapore Pte Ltd. Expected to take place over the next two years. The project is aimed at establishing greater understanding of the use of Palm Oil Methyl Esters (“POME”) as a motor fuel in climate conditions prevailing in Southeast Asian countries. The emission and fuel consumption of 15 modern diesel cars fitted with diesel particulate filters will be evaluated. These cars comply with Euro IV standards – the emission standard implemented for all new diesel vehicles registered in Singapore from 1 October 2006. The biodiesel used for the testbed will contain a blend of 5% POME by volume and 95% ultra-low sulphur diesel.
