San Diego, CA, July 26, 2010 -- ART SAN DIEGO Contemporary Art Fair 2010, presented by UBS Financial Services, announces a one-day conference highlighting transformative arts and culture initiatives nationwide and exploring how these initiatives can be localized to San Diego. The program, Art in the City: Utilizing Art and Culture as Transformative Tools, will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2010 is and is sponsored by the Urban Land Institute San Diego/Tijuana District Council (ULI San Diego).
The conference will be moderated by David Malmuth, a member of ULI San Diego, and a noted arts and entertainment developer responsible for the rebirth of the New Amsterdam Theater in New York and the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. The Art in the City Conference is intended to inspire a vibrant dialogue – and ensuing action – about the ability of arts and culture to make beautiful and meaningful places, provide a significant economic stimulus and enrich our civic life.
The conference format is straightforward: Invite the finest thinkers/doers in the arts nationwide to share their experiences with implementing innovative cultural programs and pair each with local leaders who are involved with steering similar initiatives. The pairings will include:
• Bob Wislow will discuss how Millennium Park in Chicago was developed and its impact on the city. Mary Beebe and Scott White will respond with the challenge and opportunity of implementing great public art in San Diego.
• Craig Robins will share his passion for art and how it has shaped Miami’s Design District. Jonathan Segal will discuss his recent work and then probe to see if the Miami model has applications in San Diego.
• Tim Jones will provide examples of how artist live/work space can be a catalytic in regenerating urban communities. Alan Ziter, Cheryl Nichols and Bob Leathers will then highlight local efforts to develop artist space at Liberty Station and downtown.
Bob Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts, will make a lunch presentation on the compelling evidence generated by his organization for arts investment as an economic driver.
The final session of the conference will apply all of the key insights from the presentations to the most strategic real estate in San Diego – the Downtown waterfront- and will include Stan Eckstut, FAIA, acknowledged as one of the world’s leading waterfront designers and Rob Quigley, FAIA, San Diego’s preeminent architect. Marco Li Mandri, who has successfully developed the Little Italy Business Improvement District, will conclude the final session with a discussion of how a waterfront district could bring similar funding and programming.
“Our Downtown waterfront should become the treasured destination of the entire region, a place for San Diegans first,” states Malmuth. “Our final session will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of ideas that support this overarching goal. We asked the presenters to envision a San Diego “front-porch” -- including The North Embarcadero, the Navy Broadway Complex. The Navy Pier and the G Street Mole -- that is beautifully designed, thoughtfully programmed and alive with the dynamic interweaving of arts and cultural elements”
The conference will be videotaped and segments will be on the web and all attendees will receive a summary of conference highlights including action steps. A group of local leaders have agreed to act as an implementation task force and champion the best ideas from the symposium.
The conference will take place at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The price to attend is $150.00, which includes all sessions, a networking breakfast, lunch with key-note speaker, post-conference cocktail reception and entry to the Art San Diego International Contemporary Art Fair on Saturday, September 4 and includes the Young Collector Night & Wine 2.0 party. Discounted tickets are available for non-profits and students.
