A Facelift for EUR 8600, or EUR 1300?

Is it still worth travelling to neighbouring countries for surgery? What are the actual savings when compared to the domestic market? At Estheticon.com (http://www.cosmetic-plastic-surgery.info) we have prepared a comparison of prices in Germany and its neighbours for your information.

Liberec, Czech Republic, December 23, 2010 -- Although a number of people believe that the heyday of travelling for cosmetic surgery is already behind us and the financial savings that medical tourism brings are minimal, the opposite is still true. The cost of various aesthetic operations varies not only by field and surgeon, but there are still significant differences among individual countries. So, German nationals interested in plastic surgery can save a relatively large sum of money by taking a trip for an operation. Whereas a client in Germany pays on average EUR5500 for breast augmentation surgery for example, in the Czech Republic it is generally possible to undergo the procedure for EUR 2700 and the Slovak Republic is EUR 500 cheaper still.

“The price of procedures are significantly influenced by the cost of the surgeon's work, which is still up to fifty percent less in the Czech and Slovak Republics when compared with a German surgeon and yet of a comparable quality,” says Pavel Hilbert, managing partner of the Estheticon.com portal (http://www.cosmetic-plastic-surgery.info). “Secondly, the higher costs of operations are also related to the cost of insuring doctors, which is significantly lower here in the Czech Republic,” adds Hilbert.

To find out why prices for aesthetic surgery procedures in Poland, for example, are almost double the price of the Czech Republic, we asked Dr. Bohumil Zálešák, chief surgeon in the Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery FNOL: “I think the Poles are better businessmen than us. They realised that it is not good to work for extremely low prices, because they then have to carry out a large number of procedures. On the one hand, that is good for professional erudition, but it's erudition under great pressure nevertheless. In situations where you have to work very quickly and with expected results, there is no room for individual adjustments of the situation. It is still the case that the quality of the work is proportional to the time that you spend on the surgery.”

Also to be considered in connection with medical tourism is the issue of patient safety, about which Dr. Zálešák, adds: “It is a phenomenon that we are probably not going to change. As globalisation continues, so medical tourism will grow and the reason is that some procedures can be can be arranged very cheaply in certain countries. I believe that the Czech Republic is one such country where you can get extremely high quality medical care at an extremely low price.”
