20 taken hostage at Mumbai Oberoi Hotel
(NewDesignWorld Press Release Center) 26 September 2008, Mumbai -- According to Headlines Today, at least 78 people were killed and over 200 injured in serial shootouts and blasts that rocked the suburbs late on Wednesday night. Mumbai Police’s anti Terror Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare along with ACP Ashok Kante and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar were among those killed in the attacks.

Armed with automatic weapons, the terrorists barged into the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal (CST) railway station, opened fire and threw a grenade, injuring several people.

Two famous south Mumbai hotels – Taj Hotel and The Oberoi – were also attacked as unidentified men fired at some guests.

The first report of firing came from Colaba's Leopold Café, followed by the Taj and then the Oberoi. Nariman Point and Cama Hospital were other places where firing took place.

It is believed that two terrorists are still holed up inside the Oberoi. Commandoes have now taken over the hotel to flush out the attackers.

Explosions were reported from Vile Parle, Santacruz airport and CST station, which is now sealed by the police. A bomb went off in a taxi parked near the airport, blowing up the entire vehicle to bits.

As news of the firing spread, Mumbaikars abandoned the trains and poured out into the streets causing traffic snarls across the city.
