Sex Offenders Slip By Online Dating Criminal Background Checks
Sugar Land, Texas April 23, 2007 – The popularity of online dating has attracted an unwanted element. Sex Offenders have found a loophole that allows them to slip by traditional criminal background checks and make it into the mainstream online dating scene.
A recent study revealed that most online daters assume that internet dating sites do criminal screenings on their clients, but most don’t. And the ones that do only do superficial checks. One major internet dating site that does background checks reports they reject 5% of applicants due to felony criminal records (including sex offenses), and another 4% are rejected because they are married.
The loophole that criminals, sex offenders and other “Online Vultures” now use regularly, and most online dating sites fail to detect, is the 1 digit change. For a person to go from a convicted felon to a person with no criminal record, is as easy as changing 1 letter in their name or one number in their date of birth or social security number.
Sex Offender, Felony and Misdemeanor Criminal Databases are indexed by name, and identifiers such as date of birth and/or social security number helps to identify and separate the individuals with the same name. So just changing 1 digit can often return “No Record Found,” and hide the very worst imaginable sex offender or criminal record possible.
Our Private Investigators know to start first by verifying the basics – Name, Date of Birth and Social. To expect anything less should be considered NEGLIGENT DATING! A National Criminal Check and a National Sex Offender Check is the minimum everyone into online dating should do BEFORE the first date.
Another often overlooked area where a convicted felon can hide a criminal history is in maiden/alias name. Crimes and Sex Offenses done under a maiden or alias name usually do not follow the person when they get married or otherwise change their name. Unless these maiden and alias names are also checked, you may be lured into a false sense of security with your new “Soul Mate.” They just may be the one your mother warned you about.
“If I were single, I would certainly consider online dating. I think it is an easy, inexpensive and quick way to meet new people. But I will admit…I am easily taken in by a pretty smile or flattering words. I would be afraid to date anyone before I did a complete background check on them.” Mickey E. D.
