JAMAICAN BUILDERS BAT FOR SUCCESS AT NEW WORLD CUP CRICKET STADIUM
Sixty construction workers will watch the opening ceremony of the ICC 2007 Cricket World Cup with great pride. They kept their eye on the ball and continued to work diligently to help build the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium, even when other workers employed at the site were involved in labour disputes and conflicts.

They’ve been in high demand since then. Thirty of the work team are now busy building the prestigious Palmyra luxury housing development in Montego Bay.

Complant, the Chinese contractors who built the Trelawny complex, will start building the Montego Bay Conference Centre in Jamaica in May 2007. The company has promised to re-hire the workers if they are available.

The local firm behind the team is Doncal Management Services. The company selected and hired the workers and provided them with ongoing support. Doncal’s assistance included conflict resolution, budgeting, industrial relations, labour law, and benefits advice. They also partnered with Complant throughout the project. Their consultancy services included assistance with industrial relations, local labour laws and guidance on productivity issues and Jamaican cultural and business norms.

The company engaged Galba Bright, a locally based productivity expert and author of the Tune up Your Emotional Intelligence Workbook™, to deliver an Emotional Intelligence Learning Programme. This helped the workers to remain focused on their work and achieve productivity targets. Commenting on the workers’ outstanding performance, Galba Bright said:

“If Jamaican workers are given the right tools and support, they can become world beaters. I encourage them to maintain their high work standards and continue to generate wealth for themselves and their families.”
