Bisphenol-A will Overtake Methyl Methacrylate as one of the Largest Acetone End-Use Markets
While the world growth in MMA is predicted to be 3-4%/year, the BPA market is forecasted to grow globally at 6-7%/year. Bisphenol-A will become the largest acetone derivative in the next couple of years.
The world acetone market was estimated at 5.9m. tonnes in 2007. It reached 6,1m. tonnes in 2008. Operating rates at phenol-acetone plants worldwide increased from 86% in 2003 to 91% in 2009 (with peaks of 95% in 1994).
Demand for acetone rose at average of 3,9% during 2002-2009. The market will see the average growth of 2,5% annually for the near future.
As a coproduct to Phenol, acetone availability depends on phenol market conditions. Phenol market is estimated to be growing 1%/year faster than acetone.
Future world demand growth for acetone will not be sufficient to absorb capacity growth leading to a surplus of acetone.
Producers are studying alternative routes to phenol that do not produce acetone.
