Volvo World Match Play Championships moves to Spain in 2009!
The Spanish golfing world is buzzing with the exciting news that the Volvo World Match Play Championships are coming to Spain in autumn, 2009!
The World Match Play Championships are leaving their ancestral home of Wentworth near London, England for sunnier climes in the Mediterranean, Finca Cortesín, just outside Marbella Costa del Sol to be precise is fast becoming one the most luxurious hotels in Marbella. This Championship which has been played for over 44 years is considered to be one of the most prestigious competitions within the golfing world attracting the top 16 players and household names such as Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and Phil Mickelson.
“It is fantastic that such a prestigious event as the World Match Play has chosen to move to a Spanish venue. Andalucía has gone from strength to strength as a golfing destination and I am sure that Finca Cortesín Golf Club hosting such an international and high profile event will further highlight to the golfing world the benefits of visiting Spain."
Spain’s Sergio García, World Ranked No.8
The relocation of the competition to Finca Cortesín which only opened in 2007 is a great achievement for the Spanish golfing industry and the local community. Finca Cortesín which is owned by Spanish developers Singlehome is considered to be one of the most elegant and prestigious urban developments on the Costa del Sol, with an investment of over 70 million Euros. This new urbanisation has always set out to rival the famous Valderrma course in Sotogrande which is currently home to the Volvo Masters.
“Volvo has enjoyed the longest-running and most mutually-beneficial relationship with The European Tour to date, a partnership we are delighted to be able to extend, whilst we look forward to establishing new partnerships with IMG and Finca Cortesín going forward into an exciting new chapter of the success story that is Volvo in golf.”
Per Ericsson, President & CEO of Volvo Event Management Golf
Alanda Cortesín is set within the Finca Cortesín development, and has prime views out over the golf course and down to the club house where all the action will be taking place. There are just 45 units in this unique boutique development, and with phase one already completed in construction. Imagine following the worlds greatest golfers on the course and then back to the club house for a refreshing drink before heading home, have a dip in the pool and then watch the highlights on Sky Sports before getting ready for the next day’s action! The development will be firmly placed on the map as a location of prestige and golfing interest over the next three years, in fact making Golfing History! Alanda Homes are proud to be part of that golfing history as Desmond O’Connor MD of the Alanda Group says ‘the magnitude of this event can not be ignored, and it shows that Andalucía is firmly committed to becoming a global player as host of major golfing events. Our infrastructure, hospitality and quality of golf courses have proven that we too can compete with any of the other great locations, in Ireland, Scotland, Dubai and the USA. This event will be the awaking of Finca Cortesín and in turn a stamp of approval for Alanda Cortesín as a superb choice of location and lifestyle’
