Google takes a leaf out of Cuil's book

Searchers looking at the sponsored listings in the Google search engine reported seeing search results which appeared in 3 columns instead of their traditional single column results.
Could this be showing that Google is concerned with the new launch of Cuil?
Cuil is already accounting for 1 in every 500 searches in the UK, and 1 in every 1000 searches globally according to Statcounter.
