Nidhi Aggarwal is a young Abstract artist who has been in the field of art for the last fifteen years quietly working her way up. Having received the Ravi Jain Annual scholarship in 1993 Nidhi has since featured in many important exhibitions across the globe including in Munich, Germany and Washington U.S.A.. Though her works have always been well appreciated in the last one year her works seem to showcase the freedom and strength like never before. both her use of colours as well as stroke play are now very confident, energetic and in a way not bound by restrictions and seem to come naturally and instinctively giving her works a bold and magnificent character. Though her works are very contemporary she uses objects that we encounter in our daily lives like, music systems, or cigars along with other human forms. Also her colours such as bright yellow or red or dark blue and pink have a lot of life in them and present a very happy and vibrant picture to the viewer.
Looking at Nidhi Aggarwal’s paintings, you are first struck with a jubilant awe: There are colours that embrace you, confound you, encircle you, vivid and electrifying, oscillating and embalming. You find a bright red or a bright yellow, you plunge into a brilliant orange or get attracted by bright blue or green dots. And yet: There are also forms, design elements, that link you to the bright brushes of the colours. Some of them seem to entrap you and link you to the canvas. They lead an individual life, crouching over the surface of the picture and gripping out here and there. There is a strange but breathtaking contrast between the colour surface and the designed forms. They sit upon the reds, the yellows or the oranges, mingling with the colour but not immersing in them. This is how Kandinsky worked in his first period when he combined full-fledged colours with designs that were not congruent with the borders of the latter. Nidhi Aggarawal’s paintings have also other features in common with the art of the Expressionism in its early phase. The audacity she takes in combining forms and colours is comparable with Willem de Kooning’s abstract expressionism; it reminds us of the “Brücke” or the “Blauer Reiter” art movements. The German artists Nolde, Kirchner or Schmitt-Rotluff had worked with the same eagerness in using brightest colours.
But Nidhi Aggarwal is an artist of the 21st century. Her grip is still more daring, still more ruthless. She jumps upon us with her paintings. She does not let us be quiet or calm. Everything is exciting, full of expression and full of movement. Even the quiet colour areas speak loudly to the spectator. At a first glance, the paintings seem to be abstracts. But when you look at them closer, you see the concise figurative elements very clearly. Here is a wild beast, roaring loudly. There are human and animal faces, there are eyes looking at us and mouths opening, and forms reminiscent of other body parts, eventually strewn over the canvas. And very often two eyes behind be rimmed spectacles look at us. They are the intimate “personal sign”, the secret motive in Nidhi’s work. They look at us, although they are behind the protective glasses. Our world is visited, we are observed by the artist, the canvas itself glances at us. It is a kind of a double view: To look into the painting and to get observed by itself.
Nidhi Aggarwal seems to show us a naïve and simple world with bright and striking colours that show all the optimism of youth. But behind you can find the highly intellectual and highly inquiring look of an artist who tries to find out what is behind our society’s surface. Naivety and an inquisitive mind are joining.
