According to “Booming Consumer Electronics Market in India”, our new research report, sales of consumer electronics, such as refrigerators, televisions, washing machines and air-conditioners, increase during the festive season in India. However, the market is anticipated to see downward trend during this festive season beginning end-September and early October that lasts till January-end to early February due to the ongoing financial crunch and sharp fluctuations in the Indian stock market.

Most of the consumer financing firms such as GE Money has pulled themselves out of the market, making it tougher for Indian consumers to avail loans for their festive shopping. In such a scenario where more than 20% of air-conditioners, refrigerators and other durable products are sold through finance schemes, sales of these goods are likely to be hit hard.

‘It is not like Indian consumers don’t have money to spend; rather, there is low consumer confidence. One possible solution to entice Indian consumer is to provide them with more freebies and bundled services”, says Shushmul Maheshwari, CEO, RNCOS. Consumer electronics manufacturers should package their products in a way that the customers derive maximum value in optimum amount.

Apart from manufacturers, retailers should also offer bundled services to attract consumers. One of the recent trends is to package co-branded products and offer them at a price which is much lower than buying a single brand. Maheshwari adds, “I think adopting such a strategy will definitely bring positive results to the sector”.

“Booming Consumer Electronics Market in India” is a comprehensive and rational analysis on the booming consumer electronics industry in India. In past few years, credit card market has shown remarkable developments. It doesn’t mean that banks will stop issuing new cards”, says a Senior Research Analyst at RNCOS.

Our report has done thorough analysis of the possible consequences of downturn on the Indian credit card market. “One should understand the fact that the credit card spending is not going to halt, but the growth will slowdown and consumers will be more cautious on their spending” says the Analyst. 2. Indian Gems & Jewellery Industry Needs Urgent Government Intervention
Contributing 13.41% in the country’s total merchandise exports in 2007-08, the Indian gems and jewellery market recorded positive growth, says new research report by RNCOS, “Indian Gems and Jewellery Market – Future Prospects to 2011”. India has emerged as one of the leading players in the global gems and jewellery industry on the back of its big pool of skilled manpower.

Although the local manufacturing activities are severely hit due to difficulties in availability of raw material, recessionary fear in the US, which makes up for nearly 50% of the global jewellery sales, and weak international demand further compounded the situation, said a RNCOS analyst. Thus, the financial fiasco in the US has hampered the Indian jewellery industry too.

RNCOS analyst has suggested that the ongoing crisis in the industry could be addressed provided the government takes necessary steps like permitting status holders to directly import and sell gold to exporters, rise in rupee subvention from 2% to 4%, releasing dollars from the government’s reserves and making adequate dollar credit lines available by RBI.

The analyst is optimistic that if the government takes the suggested steps, the Indian gems and jewellery industry will recover from this unprecedented crisis in the next six months.

3. Supermarkets to account for 20% of Poland Grocery Retail
According to a new research report “Poland Supermarket Outlook to 2012” by RNCOS, increasing investments by retailers in supermarket and drifting consumer preference will drive the share of supermarkets in grocery retail. It is anticipated that by 2012, supermarkets will account for around 20% of the total grocery retail sales in Poland from 12% in 2008. The increasing penetration of supermarket chains will be driven by favorable consumer behavior and unprecedented growth in the grocery retail sales at supermarkets.

Also, changing market dynamics and stiff competition in urban areas have forced these chains to enter smaller cities and rural areas. Till now, supermarkets have restricted themselves to urban areas which have been contributing more than 90% towards the top line growth of these chains. Smaller towns still remain an unexplored territory for chains operators’ who are facing intense competition in urban market. By tapping smaller towns, chains operators can continue to drive their top as well as bottom line growth and can also succeed in their vertical expansion plans by entering various sub markets.

The Polish supermarket industry has expanded considerably over the past decade and has remained one of the fastest growing segments of the organized retail industry. The phenomenal growth in the supermarket segment has been driven by the entry of foreign retail chain operators as compared to domestic retail chain operators. In future, these chains will shift their focus towards smaller towns and cities from urban areas.
